In Maslow's Hierarchy, what is the fifth and final level?

The fifth and final level of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs is self-actualization. This level represents the realization of an individual's potential, self-fulfillment, seeking personal growth, and peak experiences. At this stage, individuals focus on personal development and strive to achieve their highest potential, becoming everything they are capable of becoming.

Self-actualization is characterized by the pursuit of goals that are meaningful to the individual, which may include creative endeavors, personal values, and altruistic pursuits. People at this level are often more concerned with self-improvement and understanding themselves, rather than merely meeting more basic needs such as security, belonging, or esteem, which are located in the levels below.

In contrast, the other levels focus on more fundamental human needs: self-esteem relates to feelings of accomplishment and recognition; love and belonging pertains to relationships and social connections; and safety and security involve the necessity for physical and emotional safety. Self-actualization is distinct because it addresses the complete realization of an individual’s capabilities and the search for meaning in life beyond those foundational needs.
